Show #248 is Part 2 of 'Soundscapes of Chester.' Christopher R. Rogers, Ph.D., stayed with Jay Ray to talk about My City Need Something, the book he made with photographer Karim Brown. It started as a letter to PnB Rock, written the week the Philadelphia rapper was killed in 2022, when Rogers was supposed to be starting his dissertation.
They get into why hip hop scholarship should study State Property and Jadakiss alongside Tupac and Common, how Rogers "sampled" Brown's photographs the way a producer samples a record, and why Chester still feels like the Southern cousin who moved north and didn't change. |
The Remix episode plays PnB Rock, Beanie Sigel, George Benson and Patti LaBelle in full between the conversation. |
From Thursday's Live Show |
DJ Sir Daniel and Jay Ray went live two days after the midterms. They started with the turnout, about 49% of eligible voters and the second-highest midterm in over a century, and the history-making firsts in Georgia, Florida and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Then the lawsuits: Interscope's $50 million suit against Summer Walker after she invoked California's seven-year rule, and Timbaland's suit against his former managers. The night closed with flowers for two pioneers. Paid Members: the full replay is on queuepoints.com. |

Juan Atkins
The Detroit techno originator died at 64; the news broke Nov. 1. With Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson he was one of the Belleville Three, and his group Cybotron released "Alleys of Your Mind" in 1981 and "Clear," the record Missy Elliott sampled on "Lose Control" in 2005. Kevin Saunderson put it simply: "Juan was the originator of Techno, a true visionary who opened the door for so many of us, myself included." |

Juan Atkins and Richard "3070" Davis made it in Detroit. If it sounds familiar, you've heard it on Missy Elliott's "Lose Control."
